Most Malaysians hiring maids illegally

MORE than 70% of employers in Malaysia hire illegal or “express” foreign maids, reported Kosmo!. Hamidah Omar, a foreign maid agency officer, was quoted as saying that the problem had now become an “epidemic” and should be taken very seriously by the relevant authorities.
She said the main reason why employers chose “express” maids was because they were cheaper than those hired through the proper channels.
The tabloid reported that syndicates provided “express” maids with agency fees of RM200 per person compared with the RM7,000 through registered agents.
The maid’s salary, however, would remain at a minimum of RM500.
Hamidah said the situation worsened now with more women joining the workforce.
These “express” maids also carry other risks such as having criminal records or suffer from infectious diseases.
> Harian Metro reported that about 50,000 to 60,000 maids from Mindanao are expected to be brought in to meet the rising demand for domestic help in the country.
Malaysian Association Of Foreign Maid Agencies president Datuk Raja Zulkepley Dahalan said the high demand for maids had caused agencies to look for other sources besides Indonesia.
“There are now about 10,000 Filipino maids here, but most are from Luzon and they are Christians.
“So we are focusing on bringing in maids from Mindanao as they are Muslims and should have no problems working for Muslim employers here,” he was quoted saying.
